Anyone who plays the cello knows the “endless stories” of tuning a cello all too well. Especially on stage we admire the violinists who simply turn their pegs while bowing the string - and the violin is in tune. Tuning an out-of-tune cello precisely by only using regular fine tuners can take a fair amount of time. Subsequently the colleagues of the string quartet or a whole orchestra have to wait until “the cellist has tuned his cello”. For this reason cello players prefer not to tune on stage but before the concert… Those who play gut strings perhaps may have an advantage - they tune with the pegs, even if it is very hard. But if we think of a scordatura on top of that like in Kodaly’s solo sonata, Bach’s 5th suite or of an – maybe for this reason unloved Schumann piano quartet, tuning a cello can become a real problem and finally have a negative effect on a performance.
But this is all over now. For more that a year I am using the new Finetune-Pegs made by WITTNER. With this peg perfect tuning of steel strings has become a straightforward, precise and time-wise predictable task thanks to the built-in and sufficient “gear ratio”. It works always and everywhere – even with scordaturas and while tuning back to regular tuning: All of this is no longer a problem.
One more advantage: Changing a string probably having a sticking peg that can not be loosened – maybe only with a whole lot of effort; breaking a new string because of a skipping peg that has too much or too little peg lubricant… all of this no longer exists. It has become a “child’s game”: You can unwind the old string as easily as you will wind up the new one – always with the same slight resistance.
